Description

The project activity involves the establishment of a wind farm of an installed capacity of 150MW, enabling electricity generation by state-of-art 1.5 MW capacity Wind Turbine Generators. The electricity generation from this wind farm will contribute to GHG emission reductions as the accordant amount of electricity in absence of the project would have been delivered through the grid, which to a large extent is fed by fossil fuels. The project also increases the total capacity of renewable energy in Gujarat and contributes to close the existing energy gap.

Situation on the ground:

The project activity has negative impacts on the Great Indian Bustard sanctuary, as the wind farm has been build less than 100m from the sanctuary area. In the Project Design Document (PDD) it was acknowledged by the project proponents that the project activity will influence bird flying routes. It was further outlined that the birds will easily comply with the changes in the topography. As this might be true for many species of birds, the influence this project places on the Great Indian Bustard sanctuary located very close to the project activity is evident. The Great Indian Bustard is one of the endangered bird species in India and needs special protection. The noise of the wind turbines adversely impacts the birds and causes a decrease of the bird population, as these birds need a quiet area as breeding grounds and habitat. According to the sustainable development benefits that will be generated by the project activity as indicated in the PDD, the quality of life of the people will be improved. Yet, the project activity influences the agricultural productivity of the area since the wind turbines have negative effects on the water flow to the agricultural fields. Being dependent on agriculture, this has far reaching consequences for the livelihoods of the local population. Insufficient safety regulations in the electricity storage and supply facility caused numerous fire accidents in the project site.
