Description

The project activity generates electricity using hydro potential and converts it into mechanical energy using hydro turbines, which drives the alternators to generate energy. The generated electricity is exported to the regional grid system, which is NEWNE regional grid. The electricity generated by the proposed activity is non-GHG source and it also reduces the proportion of electricity generated by fossil fuel powered plants in the grid leading to a less carbon intensive grid. The project is a 7 (2×3.5 MW) MW Run-of-the-River hydro power project and expected to generate 27.89 GWh of power per year. The estimated annual average amount of emission reduction due to the reforestation project for a crediting period of seven years is 22957 tCO2e per annum.

Situation on the ground:

The build of a canal necessary for the construction of the hydro power plant has had negative effects on the water availability in the region. Despite the claim in the Project Design Document (PDD) that the project activity would not alter any environmental or biological attributes of the area, effects on access to water resources have been caused. Being mostly dependent on wells to meet their water needs, the decreased accessibility of water has severe consequences for the local population, also in terms of agricultural productivity. The company put efforts in compensating for trees that had to be cut for the project activity in planting an equal number of trees in other areas for the ones that had been felled. However, water availability in the region has decreased, severely impacting the local population.
